Choosing Plants for Potager Gardens
Potager vegetable gardens should consider color. Thanks to nature there is an infinite number of color combinations to choose from. Contrasting colors can create a real sense of drama. For example, try placing red cabbage next to the common green cabbage. Ornamental plants can really come into their own in potager gardens. In particular, Calendula, echinacea, sunflowers, and nasturtiums can help make a gorgeous Potager Garden. There are many useful companion plants like chamomile, marigold, calendula, rose, zinnia, and daisy flowers for instance. Finally, these also provide barriers to insects. Pollinators appreciate for these flowers for their nectar, which encourages pollination of all of the crops. See our pollinator and butterfly attracting flowers article for more info on pollinators.
